Effectiveness of technology use during the pretrial and probation process

No matter your stage in life, the community you’re in, or your industry, we are all stronger together. When it comes to both pretrial and probation processes, having open dialogue about issues in the system and how to correct them is key to building a stronger community. Miscommunication about court hearings and parole meetings can lead to increased sanctions, including jail time when individuals might otherwise have been able to avoid it.

Corrisoft’s AIR® technology can help open more direct dialogue between courts and parole officers and those who are awaiting trial or on parole. Through smartphone-based technology, justice-impacted individuals have a reliable source to turn to for court dates and meetings. It allows them to directly communicate with courts and parole supervisors to answer questions they might have. This open, available line of communication strengthens our communities and keeps people on the right track.

Makes supervision easier

By providing someone with a smartphone, like AIR® Mobile, or setting up a monitoring app on their current device, you are providing them with a reliable way to communicate with courts and supervisors. These resources can help them keep track of important dates and appointments. It can also help them contact the right person when questions arise.

Having a reliable means of communication reduces the number of individuals placed in jails for something as simple as miscommunication or a forgotten court date. A study found that average court appearances increased from 48% to 62% when officials called defendants five to nine days before they were to appear in court.

Using electronic monitoring devices like Corrisoft’s AIR® Mobile helps give those defendants a more reliable mode of communication to be able to receive those reminder calls.

Decreases stigma

While some situations might require an ankle monitor, smartphone-based technology can help decrease the stigma around low-risk pretrial and paroled participants. It’s more discrete and allows individuals to stay in contact and informed. It also allows people to continue with their everyday lives — from being with their families and taking care of children to maintaining employment.

A George Washington University Law School study found that such activities are often difficult for those participating in ankle-monitoring programs. Tasks including taking children to school or going to the grocery store require pre-approval from the courts or parole officers. The ankle monitor charging requirements can also limit a person’s movements for about two hours or more at a time.

This can restrict their ability to move freely throughout the day and limit the times in which they can schedule appointments.
